Michael & Karin's First Ice Landing
In February of this year, Michael and Karin Goulian flew their Aviat Husky to make their first-ever flight to Alton Bay, NH, home of the famed ice runway. Alton Bay is a sea-plane base in the summer months and an ice runway in the winter when the ice is at least 20″ thick. Alton Bay (B18) is the only FAA-registered ice runway in the lower 48 states so it attracts pilots from all over the region.
Hop aboard and watch Michael and Karin complete this milestone, a fun winter tradition for pilots in New England.

Save the Date: Open House - May 17th!
To kick off the summer flying season, we invite you to join us at Revolution Hall right next to KBED in Lexington for a relaxing afternoon. Cirrus will have their demo G7 SR on the lawn for the weekend – a great chance to see one up close. Bring your family and friends, enjoy some live music and meet other MGAV clients! We hope to see you at Revolution Hall on May 17th!
Look out for an email in April to RSVP. Lots of fun raffles and more!
It will be a double-header MGAV event weekend as we are a sponsor of the Bedford Cars & Coffee event the following day at Revolution Hall, on Sunday morning, May 18th. If you have a passion for cars, bring your ride and put it on display during the car show. You won’t be alone as over 200 cars are expected at the event. No entry fee or RSVP, just show up, enjoy a coffee, and talk about cars and airplanes with other attendees. See you there!

Pro-Tip: The Importance of Go-Arounds
This month we will discuss an easily overlooked but important maneuver that all MGAV pilots should master: the Go-Around. The go-around is a vital tool in a pilot’s skill set to help make them a safe, competent aviator. Like many other skills, the best way to achieve proficiency in them is through regular practice.
For many students, the go-around is often introduced after they have started to learn landings. Our instructors taught us if things weren’t looking right we could go around. In reality, we should be looking at it from the opposite perspective: We are going around unless our approach looks absolutely perfect. This mentality forces us to be fully prepared to go-around on every approach and landing.

Meet CFI Palmer Timmons
Meet Palmer Timmons, one of our newest Mike Goulian Aviation flight instructors. Teaching from our KPYM location, he will focus on aerobatic and tailwheel flight instruction.
Inspired by his father’s service as a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, and listening to stories about flying told by his father’s fighter pilot friends, Palmer attended the University of North Dakota to learn how to fly and acquire his pilot ratings. While in college, he found that his true passion in aviation was flying aerobatics and went on to represent the UND Aerobatic Team at the 2022 National Championship. Competing against other colleges and adult competitors, he won the Sportsman Power category that year.
Palmer later moved to San Diego to fly Extra 330s, introducing pilot enthusiasts to the joy of aerobatic flying. Palmer trained in formation flight and Basic Fighter Maneuver (BFM) sorties by a former F-16 instructor pilot. He also flew formation clinics in T-34’s and Yak 52’s for flyover events as both a wingman and a Flight Lead.
We welcome Palmer onto the Mike Goulian team as an Aerobatic/UPRT and Tailwheel/Backcountry Instructor and are excited to help our pilots improve their stick and rudder skills.

March IAC Event Wrap-up
On Sunday, March 16th, Mike Goulian Aviation welcomed over 100 flying enthusiasts and members of the local International Aerobatic Club (IAC) Chapter 35 to our Plymouth hangar. MGAV is proud to be part of the New England sport flying community and we enjoyed hosting the meeting and getting to know the attendees over lunch.
The highlight of the afternoon was having our founder, Michael Goulian, make the keynote address about the Normalization of Deviance and how it can affect pilots and organizations in aviation. In a few weeks, the 2025 flying season will be upon us again. If you’ve been thinking about earning your tailwheel endorsement or brushing the rust off with our upset prevention and recovery course, we’re ready to help you accomplish those flying goals with our specially trained CFIs and airplanes like the American Champion Decathalon and our two-seat Extra.
In case you’re interested in taking your learning to the next level, we offer basic and advanced aerobatic instruction out of our KPYM location. In addition, we will be offering our backcountry and adventure flying courses in our Huskys once the grass runways firm up a bit. We look forward to flying with you and expanding your skills envelope. We promise you will learn so much and have a blast in the process.
