04 / Meet Andrew Barr, CFI
My name is Andrew Barr, and it is a pleasure to be a part of the MGAV family. From the age of 13, I was a caddy and proceeded to play and work my way into becoming a golf club professional. I attended the University of South Carolina in Aiken and, subsequently, the PGA Professional Golf Management program which enabled me to focus on managing a multitude of golf operations for over 12 years. I worked up and down the east coast from the age of 22 in the golf industry until I shifted gears to pursue my aviation dream in 2022.
Growing up, my grandfather and uncle flew for fun. It was as a child that my dream of flying began. Fast forward to a few years back, it was my cousin who gave me the courage to make the jump into pursuing my dream full-time. With family members who work for Delta as a flight attendant and as a flight engineer for the USAF on a C-5 I saw the amazing opportunities that the aviation industry could bring. The last couple of years have been gratifying in ways I never expected. It is with great honor that I am able to continue my aviation journey with all of you.
Please welcome Andrew as one of our newest Cirrus Training Center Instructors.
05 / Husky Tailwheel and Back Country Training with Ryan Tierney
Husky Flight Instructor Ryan Tierney:
“We are very excited to be offering tailwheel and backcountry flight training in the Aviat Husky A1C. There are an endless number of different learning opportunities and experiences that this incredibly versatile aircraft can offer. Whether you’re looking for some tailwheel training to improve your stick and rudder skills or looking to take the airplane into unimproved strips in the backcountry for a fishing or camping trip, this plane can do it all!
When training in the Husky, we will be focusing on several skills that you typically may not utilize for your everyday flying. In our tailwheel training program, you will learn the proper techniques for three-point, wheel, short field, and crosswind landings on both paved and grass surfaces. By mastering these different types of landings, you will have a much better grasp on crucial hand-flying concepts such as coordination, adverse yaw, and preventing side-loaded landings. Not only will this ensure your ability to land a tailwheel aircraft safely, but these skills will transfer to flying any aircraft!
However, there is a lot more to flying this airplane than just the pilot’s ability to use the stick and rudder. In our backcountry program, we will work on your ability to read the environment and improve your situational and perceptive awareness. How do you know which direction to land when the field you are flying into doesn’t have a METAR or even an ASOS? How do you fly the approach into a field where the terrain prevents a normal traffic pattern? What is the proper way to cross over a mountain ridge at high-density altitudes? We are looking to challenge and improve your critical thinking abilities while assessing and mitigating the risks that you don’t typically see in your normal flying.
The Aviat Husky opens us up to a whole different world of aviation. We are very excited for all the new opportunities this aircraft can provide!”
