Winter Operations for maintaining your Cirrus Aircraft is a crucial step when preflighting, especially for our fellow New Englanders!

When it comes to frost, even the slightest contamination could cause your wing to lose performance and even make it difficult to get off the ground. Here are some ways you can defrost your plane before taking off:
  • Spray TKS to melt the frost/ice and wipe clean. You can use a garden-style sprayer. (There two approved fluids, AL-5 and DTD-406B).
  • Park your aircraft facing the sun and wipe the melting frost off. (This can take time).
  • Move your aircraft to a heated hangar until the frost melts.
For SR22 and SR22Ts certified with FIKI (Flight Into Known Ice), you should still follow this rule. While FIKI can handle most icing conditions, it’s crucial to have studied the Cirrus Icing Awareness course and pass the quiz at the end of the course. If not completed every 24 months, your FIKI certification will be invalid. Please note, the FIKI system has its limitations! Treat icing conditions with respect at all times.

Have you met CFII, Gordon Landale?

Gordon is a Massachusetts native, inspired to fly at an early age by his father and brothers. He left the area 30 years ago to join the Army. Upon retiring from 25 years of service in the Army’s Special Forces, he turned his love of flying and teaching into a professional flight instructor career.

As a Master Flight Instructor, Gordon has more than 2,000 hours of flight time and 1,200 of instruction given. The only thing he enjoys more than flying is being able to share it with others, helping people reach their goals, building safe, competent, and confident pilots while having fun in the process. Passionate about safety and continuing education, Gordon is also a FAA Safety Team (FAAST) volunteer representative.

He recently moved back to the northeast and joined the MGAV team in June 2022. When he’s not instructing, he enjoys traveling New England with his wife and three young daughters.
